Venus Williams made her return to the U.S. Open singles draw last week as the first-round match that included world No. 1 Serena Williams, who was barred from the U.S. Open after failing a drugs test, moved to Monday.
Wins two straight Olympic golds — on clay and grass — to move her season’s best into second place on the all-time scoring charts. She will play at the London Games after winning her first major final at the French Open.
Williams played her first match in three months and got off to a solid start, beating compatriot Jelena Dokic of Croatia 6-3, 6-0. She then advanced with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Canadian Eugenie Bouchard.
The U.S. Open has a long history of first-round upsets, something that will be interesting to watch.
